Domestic violence has become a pandemic within the COVID-19 pandemic. The American Journal of Emergency Medicine cited a 27% increase in domestic violence calls to the Jefferson County, AL Sherrif’s office in March 2020 compared to March 2019!

The UK launched an initiative in 2016 to prevent sexual assault. The initiative involved placing posters in strategic locations like restrooms notifying patrons that they can ask a staff member for “Angela.” The name functions as a code word indicating to staff that the person feels unsafe and at risk for sexual violence. Employees can then help the customer escape the unsafe situation. Have you heard of anything similar in the United States? If not, do you have any ideas or suggestions for similar initiatives in America?

Violence Against Women Act

This week, the House of Representatives will vote for the re-authorization of the Violence Against Women Act. The updated act will improve the prevention of violence against women, support communities of color, increase access to housing for victims, prevent domestic abusers from obtaining firearms, help victims gain and maintain economic independence, and enhance the healthcare system’s response to domestic violence and sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking. Please ask your local representative to vote for the Violence Against Women Act!
